This mix between the computer and abstract expressionism had its beginning in 1994 when I did a series of abstract expression paintings using a computer painting program. I had a pinched nerve in my neck and could not raise my arm to paint normally. But, as Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni once said, “you paint with your mind not your hand”. Therefore, my first use of the computer as a tool for an artist began. The computers and software available in 1994 limited the size of the images you could create in a reasonable amount of time. The resulting compositions look like they are composed of many tiny pixels. Recently, I was reminded of this series and looked at them with older more mature eyes. They say what all of my work is trying to do. We live in a computer dominated society with the Internet. Almost everyone uses a computer daily in both work and play. It has become a dominant tool for all members of our world.

I want this Hard Edge Abstract Expression Series to have that feel of change and that touch of computer on/off method of operation. I believe that as I enlarge the abstract images from the 1994 series this kind of work will say even more about the time we live in.
